Jacobs pleads with the court, on his knees, his walking stick nearby. Between May 1692 and March 1693, 200 innocent people from the Salem region were accused, 25 sentenced to death, 19 hanged and one man pressed to death. A visit to PEM’s Phillips Library Reading Room in nearby Rowley is a special occasion for authors, researchers and history buffs.

Our tour group of ten was led into a room with a large fireplace, where I learned that women in the 17th century would soak their skirts in water to help prevent the fabric from catching fire. If a woman’s skirt caught fire while tending to the kitchen, it would be impossible for her to undress quickly enough to save herself. This resulted in horrific deaths for those who were unfortunate enough to find themselves in this situation. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s birthplace, moved to the grounds of The House of the Seven Gables in 1958, from its original location a few blocks away on Union Street.

Salem is more than the witch trials and hangings of 19 innocent people. Nonetheless, it’s impossible to overlook the impact that 1692 had on the city — then and now. Monuments, cemeteries and museums are forever reminders of what happened.

Those accused of practicing witchcraft and executed were not allowed a Christian burial. Some have said that grieving family members came after dark to retrieve the bodies of their loved ones. They could be heard crying quietly as they went about the heartbreaking task of recovering bodies. For decades if not centuries, the site of the killings was thought by most to be nearby at Gallows Hill. Even neighbors whose property abuts Proctor’s Ledge had no idea. John Lennon and Yoko Ono were among those said to have paid their respects at the wrong location.

Five people were also killed in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza overnight when an Israeli strike hit a house, according to officials at the al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital. Bass and her family were not harmed when a suspect gained access to Getty House, the LA mayor’s official residence on Irving Boulevard. The California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt campus will remain closed through the weekend as protesters, including "unidentified non-students," continue to occupy two buildings, school officials said in an update. In 1853, Hawthorne was appointed the American Consul to England. He lived in Liverpool for four years and kept a journal related to his travels and observations in England.

It is then that he starts to visit his cousin Susanna at the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion, which would later be the backdrop for his famed novel, The House of the Seven Gables. Emmerton used ticket and store sale proceeds from the museum to fund The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association. In the late 1800s/early 1900s, the settlement house movement was seen as the progressive method to help newly arriving immigrant families adapt to life in their new cities. Settlement houses offered a variety of services including classes, medical care, and recreational opportunities. Emmerton’s goal was to preserve the house for future generations, provide educational opportunities for visitors and use the proceeds from the tours to fund her settlement programs.

The Salem that Caroline grew up in was the Salem of “The Gilded Age,” when advances in machinery led to economic growth, waves of immigration, and tension around class inequality. These trends influenced Emmerton’s career choice later in life. For more than a century, The House of the Seven Gables has been a welcoming, thriving, historic site and community resource that engages people of all backgrounds in our inclusive American story. The city is a melting pot of cultures, leading to a wide array of food, music, and festivals. Residents can enjoy cuisine from all over the world, visit museums like the Getty Center, or attend live shows and concerts. However, newcomers should be aware that traffic congestion is a significant issue, and public transportation options, while improving, may not cover all areas extensively.

Israel blames Hamas for civilian casualties, accusing it of embedding in residential areas. Israel has reported at least 260 soldiers killed since the start of ground operations. Student protests over the war have emerged on a growing number of college campuses in the U.S., while demonstrations continue in many countries. Hamas said Friday that it was open to any "ideas or suggestions" that take into consideration the needs of the Palestinian people. The group has said it won't back down from demands for a permanent cease-fire and full withdrawal of Israeli troops. Israel has rejected both and said that it will continue military operations until Hamas is defeated and that it will retain a security presence in Gaza afterward.

The walls had several layers of peeling paint, revealing the real age of the house. Eventually, the house was purchased by Caroline Emmerton whorestored it and made some really cool changes (more on this later). She alsoopened up an association to help immigrants with settlement programs. The House of The Seven Gables was passed down through generations and once belonged to Susanna Ingersoll, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s second cousin.

On the seafront stood The House of the Seven Gables, a darkwooden mansion equipped with seven gables. If you visit, see if you can spot all seven before you goinside. The house is surrounded by an incredibly beautiful seaside gardenoutfitted with a well. As I walked towards the entrance, I spotted a tiny birdhouse-like library.

Both the Witch House and the Witch Museum have made it their purpose to tell the story in graphic, even cinematic ways. His dark and impressive gabled colonial home is now a museum that intersperses stories of Corwin and the trials with everyday life in the Puritan community. The Salem Witch Museum is open throughout the year and offers two primary presentations — a deep dive into 1692 Salem and a look at the evolving perception of the witch dating back to Europe pre-1692. The museum is hard to miss, with its Gothic Revival architecture, and its central location across from Salem’s beautiful common. Its website is filled with stories and videos that describe the trials’ timeline and historical events. The Peabody Essex Museum in Salem holds 511 original documents from the 1692 Salem witch trials.
